ABSTRACT
Acne vulgaris is a prevalent chronic skin disorder that significantly impairs quality of life and is often addressed with synthetic agents, which can cause adverse effects and drug resistance. Herbal therapies utilizing natural ingredients offer a safer, multitargeted approach for acne management. This review focuses on the scientific rationale and formulation aspects of an anti-acne gel containing clove oil, aloe vera, and turmeric. Clove oil is recognized for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory actions, effectively reducing the proliferation of acne-causing bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Cutibacterium acnes while soothing inflamed skin. Aloe vera contributes moisturizing, healing, and antibacterial properties, accelerating skin repair and reducing erythema and scarring. Turmeric, rich in curcuminoids, offers potent anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects, helping to suppress cytokine-mediated inflammation and promote clear skin. Studies on polyherbal gels with these ingredients report excellent antimicrobial activity, notable reduction in acne lesions, and high safety profiles, with optimal physicochemical attributes such as pH, spreadability, and stability. Overall, a gel formulation combining clove oil, aloe vera, and turmeric delivers synergistic anti-acne efficacy and is a promising alternative to conventional therapies, meriting further clinical trials for standardization and large-scale use.
