Abstract

A REVIEW OF FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF ANTI MICROBIAL CREAM USING DIFFERENT PLANT EXTRACT

Dr. Alinda Thomaseena*, A. Yamuna, M. Ramya, M. Suresh

ABSTRACT

Herbal antimicrobial creams have gained considerable importance in recent years due to the increasing demand for natural and safer therapeutic alternatives to synthetic drugs. Traditionally, antibiotics were primarily derived from microorganisms, whereas many chemotherapeutic agents have originated from plant sources. Herbal medicine involves the use of different parts of plants such as leaves, roots, stems, bark, seeds, and flowers for medicinal purposes. These plant materials are rich in bioactive constituents including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, phenolic compounds, and terpenoids, which are known to exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities, particularly antimicrobial effects. The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance, coupled with the adverse effects associated with prolonged use of synthetic antimicrobial agents, has accelerated the interest in plant-based formulations. Topical drug delivery systems play a crucial role in the management of skin infections, as they provide direct application of therapeutic agents to the affected area. Among these systems, creams are widely used due to their semisolid nature, occlusive properties, and ability to enhance drug penetration through the skin. Cream form a protective layer over the skin, preventing moisture loss and promoting healing of infected or damaged tissues. The prolonged contact time offered by cream ensures sustained release of active ingredients, thereby improving therapeutic efficacy. Herbal antimicrobial creams are particularly beneficial in treating skin infections, wounds, burns, and dermatological disorders caused by microbial pathogens.
